NW Indiana Sex Crimes Bring Call for Center

MUNSTER, Ind. (AP): Sex crimes have reached so high a level in northwest Indiana that some advocates are calling for a special treatment center dedicated to serving the victims.

Franciscan Alliance treated 108 sexual assault victims at its local hospitals last year. Methodist Hospitals reported 117 sexual assault cases at its Gary and Merrillville campuses combined in 2013.

Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter tells The Times he thinks the true number is higher. He compares the problem to an epidemic.

A nurse named Nancy Healy is leading a drive to open a treatment center for sexual assault victims in Schererville. The nonprofit center would rely on grants, donations and fundraising.

She says privacy is a primary concern for the victims.
