Monserrate Shirley, a registered nurse in Indianapolis, is accused of causing a gas explosion in her home to collect insurance money. She is now facing an emergency license suspension.

Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office filed a petition yesterday to immediately suspend Shirley’s nursing license with the Indiana State Board of Nursing. The board will consider approving the petition at its next meeting on Jan. 17th.

“Due to the seriousness of the criminal charges facing Monserrate Shirley, we believe it is in the best interest of the public to suspend her ability to practice nursing,” Zoeller said.

“Our office will work with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and await the outcome of the criminal proceedings before determining whether a formal licensing complaint will be filed.”

In November, an explosion occurred at Shirley’s home destroying the residence and numerous nearby houses – totaling about $4 million in damages. The explosion resulted in the death of two people and caused physical injury to several neighbors.

On Dec. 20th, Shirley was charged in Marion County with two counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit arson, a Class A felony, 12 counts of arson, a Class A felony, and 33 counts of arson, a Class B felony.
