FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The Northwood Post Office in Fort Wayne is back up and running after being closed due to sewage backup.

Heavy flooding on Monday night caused the sewage backup in the office basement, closing the building on Tuesday.

Mary Dando with Corporate Communications at the United States Post Office spoke with WOWO Wednesday.

Dando said employees worked throughout the night Tuesday to ensure the building was running its usual hours Wednesday.

“We got to clean the basement last night,” Dando said. “And then the rest of the building, the building where employees worked and the retail unit, all of that is completely clean. The basement area… they took all the water out last night.”

Once the water was completely out of the basement and sealed, the all-clear was given to reopen on Wednesday.

Dando said the basement area will also be worked on again this morning to ensure the sewage is completely gone and clean.

Greater Indiana District Manager Todd Hawkins stressed the importance of customer and employee safety in a press release Wednesday.

“The safety of our customers and our employees is paramount to the U.S. Postal Service, and because of this tremendous joint effort, we were able to reopen the Northwood Post Office this morning and continue to provide excellent service to our customers,” said Hawkins in the release.
