Northwest Indiana Police Officer Shot, wounded

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP): A northwest Indiana police officer has been shot and wounded and the suspected gunman has been killed during a confrontation at a condominium.

The officer was identified as 24-year-old Nickolaus Schultz. Police say he was shot in the head and taken in critical condition to a hospital in the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn.

Officers were responding to calls about an evicted tenant who had apparently moved back into the home in Merrillville.

Police say the 33-year-old suspect was wearing body armor at the time of the shooting. He was identified as Michael Hrnciar.

Cmdr. Don Foley of the Indiana Major Crimes Task Force says a bomb squad was called out because authorities feared there could be a makeshift bomb on the property. The scene was later cleared as safe.
