Police say the nine victims of a stabbing attack at a Boise, Idaho, apartment complex included refugee families from Syria, Iraq and Ethiopia.

The victims included six children who were attending a birthday party at the apartment complex Saturday night. Three adults were also injured while trying to help the children.

Police Chief William Bones said Sunday that 30-year-old Timmy Kinner has been charged with several felonies. Bones said Kinner had been temporarily staying with a resident of the complex but had been asked to leave on Friday because of problems with his behavior.

Megan Schwab with the International Rescue Committee said the violent attack may compound the existing trauma already experienced by the refugee families, many of whom fled war and conflict in hopes of finding safety in the U.S.

Boise, Idaho, police say the suspect in a mass stabbing that injured nine people had targeted a three-year-old girl’s birthday party.

Police Chief William Bones said Sunday that the birthday girl was among the injured, as were five other children aged four to 12. Three adults who tried to save the children were also hurt. Bones said all are alive, although some are gravely injured.

Bones said a resident of the apartment complex where the stabbing took place had allowed 30-year-old Timmy Kinner to stay there a short time, but asked him to leave Friday because of his behavior.

Police say Kinner returned Saturday, when the girl was having her party a few doors down from where he had stayed.

The complex houses many resettled refugee families, but Kinner is not a refugee.
