Next Step for Regional Cities Funding: Getting a Local Match

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Earlier this week Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana were told they'd be getting $42-million in Regional Cities funding… so what happens next?

John Sampson of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership says the next step is setting some priorities, chief of which is finding the money to make a local match of the funds.

“We asked the state to support more projects than we knew they would commit to, so we've got a longer list of needs than they had money to support. The real challenge for us will be to get the local match.”

There's another hitch: the General Assembly had only approved $84-million for the Regional Cities program, enough for two winners, but Tuesday a total of three winners were chosen, with each told they'd receive $42-million. Now the Legislature needs to approve the extra cash.

Another priority is just that: prioritizing where the funds go:

“There are projects like Fort Wayne's Riverfront development, there's another project called the Landings, there are projects all over the region.”

A recent survey of Fort Wayne residents lists more retail and housing options as projects they'd like to see get priority.
