Next Phase of Grand Calumet Cleanup Set for September

EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) _ The next phase of an ongoing effort to dredge contaminated sediment from northwestern Indiana's Grand Calumet River and adjacent is set to get underway next month.

The Post-Tribune reports that the cost of the overall $80 million cleanup is being split between the federal and local governments.

The project involves removing PCBs, heavy metals, pesticides and other contaminants by dredging more than 350,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Grand Calumet River and Roxana Marsh in East Chicago.

The cleanup that began in 2009 will also restore the wetlands around the river, removing invasive plants and building small ponds around the river.

Vegetation natural to the northwestern Indiana habitat will be planted in the cleanup areas.
