New Parking Garage for Butler University

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): Butler University will get some badly needed parking help, but that means the campus will also have to endure some parking shortages over the next year or so.

Butler's board of trustees approved spending $20 million for construction of a five-story parking garage to be built on top of an existing parking lot between Clowes Memorial Hall and Lake Road. The lot will contain 1,038 parking spaces, providing relief to those who have trouble finding parking on the Butler campus during the school year. There will also be stores and shops on the first floor of the garage, “15,000 square feet of retail, likely to have a full service restaurant, maybe a grab-and-go, who knows what else. We‘re still trying to figure that out,” said Michael Kaltenmark, Butler's Director of External Relations. “We really think it‘s going to serve our commuter students and our faculty and staff by day, and by night, those coming to campus for events, whether at Clowes, the Schrott Center For The Arts, or Hinkle Fieldhouse.”

Construction on the garage is scheduled to begin in August, with completion expected prior to the Fall 2015 term, and that will create more parking problems for the coming school year. The lot where the garage will be built contains more than 200 parking spaces. “It's really going to hurt us during events, and we know that. But that‘s something we‘re going to have to work through knowing that a year from now when it comes event time, things will be much better,” Kaltenmark said.

Butler will also build a new residence hall with room for 600 students. It will be located on what is now a parking lot for the Irwin Library next to Sunset Avenue, with construction scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2015.
