New law delays FWPD body cam order

(Sarah Welliver/The Elkhart Truth)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A new state law has caused the Fort Wayne Police Department to think twice about an order for more body cameras

The department was going to buy 107 more cameras thanks to a federal grant, but now they’re holding off on that plan due to House Bill 1019.

Our Partners in News at 21Alive report the issue is the law’s provision that requires police to blur out any sensitive information from videos and documents, like medical information or witnesses’ faces, and that could prove to be a big hassle.

Fort Wayne Police currently have 18 body cameras with around 2100 videos on file.
