New Law Allows Local Leaders to Set School Zone Speed Limits

WHITESTOWN, Ind. (WOWO): A rural Indiana town is taking advantage of a new state law – it helped create.

Large cities like Indianapolis already had the option to lower speed limits in school zones they deemed appropriate for the safety of children.

This new law gives smaller municipalities the same right. The speed limit was 30-miles-per-hour in front of Boone Meadow Elementary School in Whitestown.

Today-the signs are changing to 25-miles-per-hour. That particular school zone was the catalyst that changed state law during this year’s General Assembly. The town council had to push for a state law change in order to allow local governments to reduce speeds in school zones to less than 30 mph.

On what was a county road built to carry farm equipment, is now carrying the majority of traffic in town – and school leaders were concerned about student safety as they walked to school in the fast-growing area.
