Needle exchange program in Allen County discussed Monday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A public hearing on setting up a needle exchange program in Allen County is going to have to wait.

On Monday, Allen County leaders met to discuss the program, which was introduced by the Fort Wayne-Allen County Health Department two weeks ago. The Journal-Gazette is reporting that there is not much consensus between health and law enforcement officials about how effective a program would be. Allen County Sheriff Dave Gladieux and Prosecutor Karen Richards both say they’d want more treatment options for participants in the program.

The issue will be discussed again in a couple weeks after the health department reviews suggestions. The purpose of the program would be to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C among needle users.
