NE Indiana City’s Former Mayor Dies at 89

ANGOLA, Ind. (AP) – A northeastern Indiana city's former mayor known for his advocacy of Trine University has died.

Former Angola Mayor John McBride died Tuesday at age 89. State Rep. Dennis Zent says his father-in-law suffered a stroke over the weekend and died at an Angola hospital.

Current Mayor Dick Hickman tells The Herald Republican (http://bit.ly/1EB1Hr5 ) that McBride was positive fixture who was always upbeat about the community some 40 miles north of Fort Wayne.

McBride was the city's mayor from 1966 until 1975, winning two elections after first being appointed to fill a vacancy. He later became Tri-State University's alumni director and historian, working at the school for 27 years before retiring in 2010.

The private school adopted the Trine University name in 2008.
