N. Indiana Man Gets 80 years for Killing Mother, Half-Sister

MONTICELLO, Ind. (AP): A judge has sentenced a northern Indiana man to 80 years in prison for fatally stabbing his mother and half-sister.

White Superior Court Judge Robert Mrzlack sentenced 23-year-old David Scott Rodenbarger Friday after he pleaded guilty but mentally ill earlier this month to two counts of murder and one of criminal confinement.

Authorities say Rodenbarger used a carving knife and fork to kill 41-year-old Michelle Haskins and 6-year-old Jillian Haskins at the family's Monticello home in February 2013.

Rodenbarger wore a bulletproof vest to the hearing and was surrounded by law enforcement officers.

Rodenbarger took the stand to say he was sorry for his actions.

Shannon Davis, a close family friend, testified she could not forgive Rodenbarger and told him, “I hate you.''
