Muncie Dealing With Canada Geese Problem

MUNCIE, Ind. (WOWO): About four decades ago it was a rare sight to spot a flock of Canada Geese. Now, they seem to be everywhere, and protection for the animals that used to be rooted in conservation has turned into an infestation that has frustrated the Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler.

Tyler is trying to relocate about 800 geese that are hanging out on some valuable parkland to the point of being pests. But the process to move the geese is just beginning and two big questions loom.

Specifics about *where* the geese would be taken still hasn‘t been released. Also, since these are geese, and not the flightless kiwi of New Zealand, they can easily fly back to Muncie.

There is also the issue of red tape, as Canada Geese are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act which means if the birds are moved without the Fed‘s thumbs up, Muncie could face some heavy fines.
