Mount Baldy Still Remains Closed

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A popular sand dune along Lake Michigan remains closed to the public more than six months after part of it collapsed and buried a young boy under 11 feet of sand.

An Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore spokesman says the park recently received data on a ground-penetrating radar sweep of Mount Baldy near Michigan City. He says it's up to a group of geologists and others to crunch the data and determine a cause for the July collapse that buried then-6-year-old Nathan Woessner of Sterling, Illinois.

If the experts determine WHY the dune collapsed, they'll then have to decide what can be done to prevent future collapses. The park also must consider the potential liability from a future collapse.
