FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Fort Wayne mom will serve four years behind bars for neglecting her son.

According to the Journal Gazette, back on January 9th, 26-year-old Marquisha Whitten had been drinking at a friends. She and her son then began walking home to the Eden Green Apartment Complex around 11:15 p.m., that evening. Somewhere along the way, her son fell down and couldn't get back up because of the depth of the snow.

Temperatures reached down to 12 degrees below zero that night, with the wind chill reported at close to 30 degrees below zero.

The boy cried and screamed for his mother to come help, she was heard yelling back at him to get up himself.

The 5-year-old was in the snow for about 10 minutes. A woman who was expecting Whitten and her son began looking for them when they didn’t show up. She found them outside. The boy suffered frostbite to his hands and feet. He was taken to the hospital and has seen been placed in foster care.

Whitten was sentenced to six years in prison with two of those years suspended. She was also ordered to serve two years probation after her release.
