FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is expected to name Eric Holcomb as his running mate for the 2016 gubernatorial race during a news conference Tuesday afternoon, a Statehouse source told the Indy Star.
Holcomb dropped out of the state U.S. Senate race Monday, leaving U.S. Reps. Marlin Stutzman and Todd Young as the Republican candidates for the Senate seat.
If he is Pence’s running mate, he would replace Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann, who is in the running to be named the next president of Ivy Tech Community College.
Holcomb has extensive Republican connections in the state. He was a top aide to Sen. Dan Coats and former Gov. Mitch Daniels.
Neither Pence nor Holcomb have confirmed the comments made by the Statehouse source.
The 2016 gubernatorial race is expected to be tight. Democrat John Gregg has not yet named his running mate.
