Michigan Woman Leads IN Police on Chase, 1-Year-Old in Backseat

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A Michigan woman was arrested in Steuben County Friday morning after leading police on a chase. Around 2:00 A.M., a trooper tried to pull over a vehicle in Angola for multiple traffic violations. The driver, 27-year-old Heather Blessing, pulled her vehicle into a parking lot before accelerating and heading back on a street.

After about two miles, Blessing lost control, ran off the side of the road, and got stuck in the snow. Police say she ignored several verbal commands as she left the vehicle and ran to the rear passenger door. She was taken into custody and officers saw that she had a one-year-old son sitting in the back seat of the car. He was put in protective custody by the Division of Child Services. A stolen and loaded handgun was also found on the front passenger side floor. Further investigation revealed that Blessing, who claimed to be 19 weeks pregnant, had been smoking meth hours before she was seen driving. After a medical examination at a hospital, she was taken into custody on the following preliminary charges:

• Neglect of a Dependent
• Resisting Law Enforcement
• Operating While Intoxicated With Passenger Less Than 18 Years of age
• Operating While Intoxicated-Felony
• Possession of Stolen Property
• Driving While Suspended Prior
