Mending social media fences, post-election

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): After months and months of political posts on Facebook and Twitter, some experts are saying you might need to mend some social media fences.

Counselor Veronica Sites says for starters, social media users need to own their words that were put online.

“Be willing to swallow the pride and say OK, you know what, this relationship means more to me than the difference of opinions that we have…. say listen, I would rather evaluate our relationship and I know that things have been heated for a lot of people and just own whatever words you have put out there,” Sites said.

She also recommends reaching out through private message and she discourages posting directly on someone’s wall.

Meanwhile, she tells WOWO News, one problem with the political, opinionated posts is the lack of accountability and regulation online.

“It (Facebook) cannot regulate everything that’s said because of the freedom of speech,” she said. “With that said, we’ve just gotten so careless with not filtering things … what we do is just rant at the tip of our tongue without regards that there will, at some point, be an accountability, a consequence, and whatever that price to pay is. We are not accounting the cost before we blurt our words.”

She says for many users, there is a lack of social media maturity and understanding. People may say things online, that perhaps they would not say face to face.
