SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A collection of at least 76,000 costume pieces for South Bend school theater productions is finding a new home.

The James Lewis Casaday Costume Collections will be moved in July to a vacant part of LaSalle Intermediate Academy. Right now it takes up a gymnasium, six classrooms and parts of hallways at another school. The collection was started in the 1930s and includes garments, hats, jewelry and other props.

Volunteers are in the process of starting a nonprofit group to oversee and manage the collection. The pieces will remain property of the schools. Organizers want to raise enough money to establish an endowment to make the collection self-supporting.

The South Bend Tribune reports that it's believed to be one of the largest theatrical costume collection owned by an elementary or high school in the country.
