Man pleads guilty to pick ax killing

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — A Gary man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for using a pick ax to kill a man he found sleeping uninvited on his couch.

Thirty-two-year-old Calvin Peacock had faced murder charges in the slaying of Kevin Sperry, who had slipped unannounced into Peacock’s home in October 2009.

Peacock pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter under a plea deal that calls for a 33-year prison sentence.

Peacock admitted to hitting Sperry in the head with a pick ax when they argued after Sperry was found in his home. Before that incident, Sperry had stolen and sold a shotgun belonging to Peacock that his grandfather had given him as a gift.

Plea documents state the combination of events caused Peacock to act in sudden heat.
