Man Gets 70 Years for Stabbing Wife with Butcher Knife

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ A Muncie man accused of trying to kill his wife by stabbing her with a butcher knife has been sentenced to 70 years in prison.

The (Muncie) Star Press reports 48-year-old Eddy Lee Buchanan was sentenced Wednesday. He was found guilty but mentally ill by a judge in July.

Prosecutors said Buchanan stabbed his wife six times in January 2012 after accusing her of infidelity. She lost about half of her blood.

Buchanan's sentence includes 40 years for his convictions, and a judge gave him 30 more years as a habitual offender penalty. The judge said he would recommend Buchanan go to a corrections facility where he can get counseling and treatment.

A public defender had asked for a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Buchanan said he planned to appeal.
