Man Gets 20 Years for Killing Woman, Removing her Eyes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to accusations that he killed a woman and removed her eyeballs.

The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/1PPuPUy ) reports Edeer Avila was sentenced Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in March, and was charged with murder at one point.

Prosecutors say Avila was found by police covered in blood as he stood outside a woman's home in November 2012. The woman was found upstairs lying on her side.

According to court records, a friend of the victim had gone to the house that morning and found Avila. Records say that when she asked where her friend was, he pointed upstairs.

The newspaper reports Avila did not make any statements during the sentencing hearing.
