Man Arrested in South Bend Teen’s 1988 Killing

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Northern Indiana prosecutors have charged a man in the 1988 killing of a teenager whose body was found in her family's home.

WSBT-TV reports St. Joseph County prosecutors charged 43-year-old Phillip Geans with one count of murder Friday in Theresa Burns' killing. He was being held without bond at the county jail in South Bend.

Geans was 18 when the 16-year-old Burns was fatally shot in her home in January 1988 after leaving Mishawaka High School. Police say Geans was a friend of one of the teen's friends.

A probable caused affidavit says Geans had spoken with “a number of people” about Burns' murder in the quarter-century since her killing.

Court documents say Geans twice told individuals he should kill them “just like he killed Theresa Burns.”
