Man arrested in connection to Garrett murder

DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A 20-year-old man was arrested on murder charges after police say he killed a 45-year-old man Tuesday afternoon.

Branston Stone Secrest was arrested on a preliminary murder charge, according to Indiana State Police. 

At about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, a 45-year-old man was found dead in his house in the 100 block of East Third Avenue. Police quickly identified Secrest as a suspect and said he was driving a gray 2011 Ford Taurus.

Fort Wayne Police Department officers found his vehicle near Coldwater Road and Coliseum Boulevard at about 5:23 p.m. He then led police on short chase, stopped the car and ran from his car near Goshen and Harris Road.

He was arrested around 5:32 p.m. in the 3600 block of Harris Road.

Secrest was taken to the Allen County Jail where he was interviewed until 9 p.m. He was then taken to DeKalb County Jail on a preliminary murder charge.

He’s being held without bond and will be formally charged on Thursday.

Garrett Middle School and Garrett High School went on lockout mode for about a half hour after the shooting was reported.
