Man Accused of Setting Downtown Vincennes Fire

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) _ Police have arrested an Indiana man they say set a fire that damaged nearly half a block of historical buildings and businesses in downtown Vincennes in 2011.

Twenty-two-year-old James LeRoy Linn Beamon of Vincennes was being held without bond Friday in the Knox County Jail. It wasn't clear whether he had an attorney.

Authorities say Beamon was arrested Thursday and confessed to setting a string of fires over three years. The Vincennes Sun-Commercial reports he faces preliminary counts of arson, attempted arson and probation violation. One felony arson count could be upgraded because a firefighter was injured.

Investigators are examining whether Beamon may have set other fires.

Vincennes, about 50 miles north of Evansville, was the capital of the pre-statehood Indiana territory from 1800 to 1813.
