Man Accused of Killing Gary Officer Back in Court

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) – An attorney for a man charged with killing a Gary policeman says his client is being denied access to a law library, paper and reading material in the Lake County Jail.

Defense attorney Richard Wolter raised the complaints over the incarceration of 26-year-old Carl Blount of Gary during a pretrial hearing Wednesday. The Munster Times reports Wolter said the defense team is checking into whether the jail has any written protocols prohibiting inmates from having paper in their cells.

Lake Superior Court Judge Samuel Cappas issued an order saying jailers must take Blount to the law library

Blount faces a possible death sentence after being charged with murder in the July 6 shooting death of 47-year-old Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield. Blount has pleaded not guilty.
