Lottery Scam Uses AG Letterhead

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Attorney General Greg Zoeller is trying to find out who is sending lottery scam letters in which the sender impersonated Zoeller.

Zoeller says emails and letters were sent claiming to offer $2 million in prize money if the “winners” first pay fees and taxes. In at least some of the letters, the scammers claiming to represent the “Mega Millions International Lottery” used a forged seal from the Attorney General‘s office for its letterhead, a forged signature from Zoeller and claim that their organization‘s legitimacy was verified by Zoeller‘s office. Zoeller says anyone who responds to the letter by paying the “taxes and fees” is unlikely to see any “winnings” from the lottery.

The letter also provides information about a supposed agent who works for “Mega Millions Headquarters”, claiming that the agent will be the person presenting any “winnings” to those who claim the fictitious prize. Zoeller says he doesn‘t know how many people received the letter or email – at least one was emailed to the WIBC newsroom this week.

“Your best bet is to ignore all phone and mail solicitations for sweepstakes promotions. If you receive what looks like lottery material from a foreign country, give it to your local postmaster.  This type of foreign solicitation is illegal,” Zoeller said.

You can report the scam Zoeller‘s office by going to www.IndianaConsumer.com or by calling 1-800-382-5516.
