Line of powerful storms spans most of N. Ind.

WINAMAC, Ind. (AP) _ A line of powerful thunderstorms that spawned several small tornadoes as it crossed Illinois has rumbled into northern Indiana.

Wednesday night, National Weather Service radar showed the strongest part of the huge storm spanned northern Indiana from Gary to Plymouth, with an outrider over Fort Wayne.

The weather service website reported golf ball sized hail damaged cars in Winamac, midway between Lafayette and South Bend. The Northern Indiana Public Service Company says about 440 customers in Dyer are without power, along with others in Crown Point, Highland and Lake Station.

Several northern Indiana counties were under severe thunderstorm warnings, but little damage was reported early Wednesday night.  In South Bend, only sprinkles were reported.

Meteorologists had said the storms could create a destructive weather phenomenon known as a derecho.
