Lawmakers Back Shifting School Policy Authority from Ritz

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana lawmakers have approved a proposal that strips Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz of some of her authority over the State Board of Education.

The House voted 60-38 Wednesday night to endorse the Republican-backed bill. The Senate approved it on a 31-17 vote.

The bill delays until 2017 a change in state law allowing the board dominated by appointees of Republican Governor Mike Pence to replace Ritz its leader. But it requires Ritz to share control of the board agenda with the vice chairman.

Other proposals included in the state budget bill give the board authority over the ISTEP standardized test and new charter school grants.

Republicans say the charges clarify control of education policy, while Democrats maintain it undermines the will of voters who elected Ritz.
