INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ State lawmakers have signed off on critical fixes to criminal sentencing rules set to take effect next month.
The General Assembly returned for a one-day meeting Tuesday to correct problems in the legislation approved earlier this year. Mistakes discovered in the criminal sentencing overhaul would have reduced sentences for some convicted child sex offenders and also would have made it harder for police to arrest suspected thieves and shoplifters.
The lawmakers voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the corrections.
They also signed off on a correction to tax credits that were designed for natural gas-powered vehicles. Legislation approved earlier this year accidentally placed caps on credits for other alternative fuels.
Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma and Republican Senate President Pro Tem David Long called Tuesday's one-day meeting a rare occurrence.
