Large Fire Destroys Evansville Apartment Building

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities say a woman told others she heard voices telling her to set the fire that destroyed a nine-unit apartment building in Evansville, leaving many people homeless.

The 47-year-old woman lived in the building and was jailed Thursday on a preliminary charge of arson that she set curtains in the apartment on fire. Police say the woman was a client of a special-needs services provider that had an employee at the apartment.

No serious injuries were reported from the fire that broke out Wednesday night in the Sugar Mill Creek Apartments complex on the city's west side.

Fire Chief Mike Connelly tells the Evansville Courier & Press the flames spread quickly after reaching the attic.
