Lafayette Day Shelter for Homeless to Close in May

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – The only day shelter for the homeless in Lafayette says it will close at the end of May due to declining funding.

Mental Health America of Tippecanoe Executive Director Jennifer Flora says the facility will cease operations May 31. But she tells the Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1yrLDsv ) that the Lafayette Transitional Housing Center has agreed to help fill the gap by providing meals, laundry and other resources starting June 1.

The change will mean a longer trek for homeless clients who move on foot between day and night shelters. Lafayette Urban Ministry executive director Joe Micon says his organization is looking into temporary bus passes or tokens for those who aren't able to make the walk back and forth.
