Kasich Calls on Clinton to Support Balanced Budget Amendment

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP): Ohio Gov. John Kasich is calling on Hillary Rodham Clinton to support his effort to require a balanced federal budget.

The potential Republican presidential candidate's comments came Thursday during a visit to Maine, where he wants lawmakers to pass a resolution petitioning Congress to call a convention of states to propose a constitutional amendment.

Kasich said the need to force Washington to balance its budget is so important that every presidential candidate should be talking about it, including Clinton. The Democrat is expected to run but hasn't announced her candidacy.

So far, 27 states have passed a balanced budget resolution. It takes 34 states to trigger a convention. There's limited interest by Democratic lawmakers in amending the Constitution to force balanced budgets on the federal government.
