Judge Hearing Issues in Indianapolis Blast Case

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Some key issues in the cases against three people charged in a deadly explosion that ravaged an Indianapolis subdivision could soon be decided.

Homeowner Monserrate Shirley; her boyfriend, Mark Leonard; and his brother, Bob Leonard, are scheduled to appear in a Marion County court Wednesday afternoon on charges of murder and arson in the Nov. 10 blast that killed two people and badly damaged dozens of homes in the Richmond Hill subdivision.

Judge Sheila Carlisle said during a July hearing that she would decide whether the three could be sentenced to life in prison without parole if they're convicted.

Defense attorneys also want the three to have separate trials. Shirley's attorney says in court papers that Mark Leonard coerced her into the insurance scheme.
