Judge: Hartford City defendant has mental health issues…

HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (WOWO): A judge has acknowledged that a Portland, Indiana man accused of killing a man and his teenage daughter has mental health issues.

When 59-year-old Charles Whittington appeared in court Monday to hear two murder charges read against him, the judge discussed post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia in acknowledging the defendant suffered from a mental disorder.

Whittington has been charged in the Thursday shooting deaths of 40-year-old Shane Williamson and his 14-year-old daughter, Katelin, at the Hartford City apartment building where they lived

The judge entered a not guilty plea for Whittington and appointed him a public defender. The judge also issued a gag order, meaning further details about the mental health issues might not be made public.
