Jeffersonville Breaks Ground on Riverfront Project

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A southern Indiana city has broken ground on a project to revamp its Ohio River shoreline to stabilize it and attract boaters to restaurants and shops.

The $3 million project in Jeffersonville began Monday eight months after the city evicted houseboats docked along the shoreline to make way for a new marina with landscaping and sidewalks.

Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore says the start of construction marks the beginning of creating a new front door for the city.

A plan approved by city's Redevelopment Commission in September includes docks to accommodate 15 transient boaters, down from 30 docks that had been proposed before the project was scaled back to cut costs.

WLKY-TV and The Courier-Journal report the project is expected to be completed in October 2015.
