Jane Avery Honored in Funeral Services Today

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana  paused this morning to honor one of its greatest servants.

Hundreds filled the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception to pay their final respects to Jane Avery, in nearly 20 years of service, she grew Community Harvest into one the best food banks in the nation. She died last week from a form a brain cancer.

In his homily, Msgr. Robert Schulte said “She had a strong heart for love and wanted to serve,” he added “Whenever I saw her she had that trademark smile. She radiated Jesus Christ.

The food bank served more than 21,000 meals a week around Northeast Indiana.

She'll be remembered for the dignity and grace she directed to the needy.

Food Bank Officials say, the leadership team lead the agency for months while she was on medical leave. They'll begin the process soon of finding a new Executive Director.

She was 62.
