IUSB Student Faces Discipline Over Gun in Backpack

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ An Indiana University South Bend student faces disciplinary action after being caught carrying a gun in his backpack.

IUSB spokesman Ken Baierl tells the South Bend Tribune the handgun was found Monday when the student left his backpack at an information technology help desk. An employee of the help desk found the gun while looking for identification to return the backpack.

Baierl says the student did not attempt to use the gun and that no one was injured. No criminal charges will be filed.

He says the student has apologized and is cooperating with university officials.

Baierl says the student is licensed to carry a handgun, but university policy prohibits firearms on campus.

The results of the disciplinary action will be kept private.
