IU Southeast Ceremony Cancelled by Lightning

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) – Thunderstorms moving through the area led to the cancellation of the outdoor commencement ceremony at Indiana University Southeast.

About 700 students were gathered for Monday's ceremony when lightning strikes within a couple miles of the New Albany campus sent the crowd indoors for safety. A second storm cell later prompted school officials to call off the event.

Interim Chancellor Barbara Bichelmeyer tells the News and Tribune that everyone was disappointed that the decision was necessary. She says the school doesn't have an adequate indoor place for the ceremony and rain chances were low when the decision was made to go ahead with the event.

Bichelmeyer says even though the students have officially graduated, plans are being made for school-by-school commencement ceremonies for next week.
