IU Prof Files Defamation Suit Against Colleague

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ An Indiana University South Bend professor is suing a colleague, contending he defamed him by allegedly telling other staffers he had plagiarized research.

Accounting professor Peter Aghimien filed his defamation complaint Tuesday against Mark Fox, who teaches management and entrepreneurship at the university.

The South Bend Tribune reports Aghimien alleges Fox complained to the university that he had plagiarized research papers, sparking a university investigation.

School spokesman Ken Baierl says that probe found that Aghimien did not commit plagiarism, but Fox maintains Aghimien did plagiarize work on a paper he co-wrote.

Aghimien's complaint says Fox accused him of plagiarism in blog posts after making the allegation to school officials. He notes the school has a policy that investigations into research misconduct are confidential while they are ongoing.
