IU Health to Lay off 96 at Martinsville Hospital

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Indiana University Health Morgan Hospital in Martinsville will lay off 96 employees when it stops admitting patients for overnight stays beginning April 1.

The Indianapolis Business Journal reports a notice that IU Health filed Tuesday with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development says a third of the displaced workers will be nurses. Others will be respiratory therapists, pharmacists, food workers and support staff.

The Martinsville hospital will still offer outpatient services, but if patients need to stay overnight, they'll be transferred elsewhere.

The laid-off workers will receive severance packages and outplacement services, including help applying for open jobs at other IU Health facilities.

IU Health Chief Financial Officer Ryan Kitchell has said the changes in Martinsville might be replicated at other IU Health hospitals around the state.
