BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP): A team of Indiana University experts is helping NASA with its ongoing mission to keep tabs on Earth's vast polar ice sheets.
IU's Research Technologies group has spent the past five years providing technology assistance to NASA's Operation IceBridge that's the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice.
The IU researchers join NASA teams twice a year for their airborne surveys over Antarctica or Greenland to collect data about how the two continents' glaciers. IU's information technology experts provide field data management, processing and archival storage for those missions.
The most recent Operation IceBridge expedition ran throughout November and ended Dec. 4, and was based out of Antarctica's McMurdo Station.
IU field engineer Justin Miller joined that mission, manning an IU-designed system that permits in-flight data capturing and processing.
