BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana University's Board of Trustees is expected to vote this week on a plan displacing six houses in a Bloomington neighborhood that city officials have been arguing against.
The houses are within the University Courts Historic District created in March by the Bloomington City Council. A new three-story Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house is planned for the site in a land swap with the university.
IU spokesman Mark Land tells The Herald-Times plans are to move four houses to nearby locations and demolish two others. Land says that work won't begin until the fraternity has raised the money for its house construction.
The university doesn't need city approval for its plans. Opponents have said destroying houses in the neighborhood that dates back about 100 years would be a mistake.
