Is It Too Cool for School?

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): With the temperatures falling, parents are asking: Is it too cool for school?

Leaders with Fort Wayne Community Schools posted the answer to that very question on their Facebook page as the school district has been receiving a number of questions regarding the cold temperatures.

We do not have a written policy regarding how cold is too cold to go to school. However, with temperatures alone, we consider a delay or closure when the temperature or sustained wind chill is -20. If the issue is temperature, a delay rarely makes a difference because when it is that cold, it typically does not change much between 6 and 8 a.m. When necessary, we take other factors into consideration as well, such as the condition of streets and the operation of the buses. Parents who feel it is not safe for their child to go to school because of frigid temperatures can choose to keep them home and call them in for an excused absence. Parents who need assistance with coats, hats, mittens or boots should contact someone at their school. We have resources to help.

The district would also greatly appreciate donations of gloves, mittens, hats and any winter weather gear.
