Inmates Using Fake waste to Deceive Drug Tests

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Some Indiana inmates are using borrowed or synthetic urine to cheat on drug tests required by probation.

But authorities are catching on to the trick.

The Journal & Courier reports officers in community corrections programs in the Lafayette area have caught several offenders using tubes or other devices to pass off acquaintances' “clean'' urine as their own. Others purchase a synthetic liquid that purportedly can pass as authentic urine.

Tippecanoe officials say they've caught inmates using the substance in an effort to beat drug tests so they can continue using drugs at will.

What officials are increasingly encountering is a fake urine that's purchase on the Internet or at headshops and is generally marked as a novelty item. Labels warn it isn't fit for human consumption.
