NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP): Inmates are secured at an eastern Indiana county jail after officials say they started a fire to try to disable locks and access a common area.

Henry County Sheriff Richard A. McCorkle told The Indianapolis Star no one was injured in the fire about 2 a.m. Wednesday at the jail in New Castle, about 50 miles east of Indianapolis.

The sheriff said the fire grew too big and the inmates called for help. He said 126 inmates were evacuated to an inside recreation area while New Castle firefighters brought the fire under control. The inmates were returned to their cells after about 90 minutes. McCorkle says inmates and jail workers were cleaning up later Wednesday morning.

Officials are investigating and trying to determine who set the fire.
