Inmate Taken to Hospital Dies in Police Custody in Indiana

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say a 19-year-old man died in police custody after being found unconscious in the back of a jail transport van taking him to a central Indiana hospital.

Police say the man, who has not been identified, had been arrested Sunday night by Greenwood police. He was booked Monday morning into the Johnson County Jail on preliminary charges of reckless possession of paraphernalia.

According to police, a jail nurse saw the inmate Monday and asked that the man be taken to the hospital next door. Police say the inmate was conscious and got into the van, but officials found him unresponsive when the van arrived at the hospital.

Indiana State Police is investigating the man's death. The county coroner's office plans to do an autopsy Tuesday morning.
