Indiana’s Grissom House Seeks Family Items

MITCHELL, Ind. (AP) _ The group that oversees the southern Indiana boyhood home of Mercury astronaut Gus Grissom is looking to add more items that belonged to Grissom or his family.

Volunteers with Virgil I. Grissom Memorial Inc. have been opening up his family's small bungalow house in the Lawrence County town of Mitchell to visitors at least two Saturdays a month.

Group president Steve Grissom tells The Times-Mail that members hope to make the house look as much as possible like it did when his cousin was growing up there.

Grissom was one of the seven original Project Mercury astronauts and the first man to fly twice in space. He and two other astronauts died in 1967 when a flash fire swept through their Apollo spacecraft during a pre-launch test.
