INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A rare Amur tiger has been born at the Indianapolis Zoo.
The zoo announced Tuesday on International Tiger Day that the cub was born July 10. The baby cat is healthy, although zoo officials say it and its mother, 6-year-old Andrea, will remain in a private indoor area for several weeks to protect the health of the newborn. Amur cubs are born blind.
The unnamed cub is Andrea's first. The cub's gender is unknown.
The Amur tiger is one of the largest cat species and appears in folklore of western and central Asia. They once numbered in the tens of thousands, but fewer than 500 are now believed to survive in the wild.
The cub's arrival brings the number of Amur tigers at the Indianapolis Zoo to four.
